The Beginnings

In 1961, The Temptations’ founding member, Otis Williams was acquainted with vocalists Eldridge Bryant and Melvin Franklin. Later they met the Alabama based singers, Paul Williams and Eddie Kendricks. The musicians formed a group among themselves by the name of The Elgins and began performing within Detroit. They found recognition when they were signed by the renowned label, Motown Records and eventually changed their name to The Temptations.

The members of The Four Tops began their career while still in high school in Detroit. Upon the insistence of friends, the four singer friends agreed to perform at a birthday party. The response was tremendous and hence they decided to pursue a career in music under the name, The Four Aims. In 1956, they signed a contract with Chess Records and changed their name to The Four Tops.

Commercial Success

The Temptations scored their first smash hit with the single ‘The Way You Want to do Things’ in 1964. The song featured Eddie Kendricks as the lead singer. The group’s following two numbers ‘Girl,’ and ‘I’ll be in Trouble’ both had Kendricks on lead vocals.  Later, David Ruffin lent his vocals for ‘My Girl,’ which went on to become The Temptations first top pop hit. The track was written by Ronnie White. Following the success of ‘My Girl,’ Ruffin continued singing and gave a string of Top20 hits that include ‘My Baby,’ ‘Since I lost My Baby’ and ‘It’s Growing.’

Songwriter Norman Whitfield wrote a number of songs for The Temptations. Majority of his songs were sung by David Ruffin on lead. Among these are ‘I’m Losing You,’ ‘It’s You That I Need’ and ‘Beauty is Only Skin Deep.’ One of the most prominent hits by the group is ‘You’re My Everything,’ in which Ruffin and Kendricks share the vocals.

The Four Tops’ first hit single ‘I Can’t Help Myself’ came out in 1965. Following the recognition received for this song, the group produced a wave of smash hits like ‘Loving You is Sweeter Than Ever,’ ‘Something About You,’ ‘Shake Me, Wake Me’ and ‘It’s the Same Old Song.’

In 1966, the group came up with ‘Reach Out I’ll Be There,’ one of the most famous of the Motown songs ever. With following hits like ‘You Keep Running Away’ and ‘7-Rooms of Gloom,’ the Four Tops also established themselves in the UK. Other popular hits by the renowned Motown act are ‘Walk Away Renee’ and ‘If I Were a Carpenter.’
