Sommore is perhaps the only female comedian to have accomplished so much in her career. She is fearless as well as very blunt in her routines, and masterfully tackles the topics ranging from political issues to everyday lives. She presents them from a women’s perspective. Her comedy is controversial, but with wit and intelligence in the style. Currently, she is the top grossing female comedienne of the US and is considered one of the best overseas as well. Sommore is the only female comedian to have hosted BET’s Comic View, which was in the 1994-95 season. This was followed by her being honored with the Richard Pryor Award in the category of “Comic of the Year”.
She has also been the host of Def Comedy Jam of Russell Simmons as well as of Showtime at the Apollo. In 2000, she was a part of the smash hit tour, Queen of Comedy, which led to an increase in her fan following. She has her name in the Guinness Book of World Record after she performed in front of 50,000 people in a show in Atlanta. In 2002, she was also featured in the “Latham Entertainment Presents Tour”, where she happened to be the only female comedian.
Acting Debut and The Oprah Winfrey Show
Sommore is not only a comedian, but also a successful actress. Her film debut was in 2002, in “Friday After Next”. This was followed by her appearance in several other featured films such as Soul Plane, Family Reunion, Dirty Laundry and Something New. She has been featured in several famous television shows as a guest star, including The Oprah Winfrey Show, after which Winfrey called her “a force to be reckoned with in this new millennium”. She has also been featured in The View, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher. CNN Headline News interviewed Sommore and asked her about her key to success as well, and later that same year she was profiled in “Special Woman in Comedy” by Comedy Central. She has also appeared in several sitcoms like The Parkers, The Hughleys and Wild N’ Out.
The Queen Stands Along and More
Being a multitalented person; Sommore is not only an accomplished comedienne, but also a producer, entrepreneur and a writer. She was the producer as well as the writer of “The Queen Stands Alone”, a show which portrayed her standup routines as a film. It debuted in September of 2008, on Comedy Central in front of 800,000 viewers. The DVD of the show is one of the bestselling comedy standup films. Featured on “Cedric the Entertainer’s Urban Circus”, she was invited to perform in Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Chicago. Over there, she performed side by side some of the most famous names of the comedy industry, such as Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld and Steve Harvey.
This was followed by her appearance in the successful “Royal Comedy Tour” where she was once again the first and only female participant. As evident from her career, Sommore has been successful in almost all of her ventures within the entertainment industry. Her journey of success continues as she remains high in demand for television roles as well as films and documentaries. She is also one of the most in demand standup acts of the day.
