Beginning
During his term at the high school, Scott Hoying gained some recognition as part of the group SoCal VoCals. As a freshman at The University of Southern California, he convinced his high school friends, Kristie Maldonado and Mitch Grassi to audition for the reality television show, The Sing-Off. The shared chemistry between the friends made the trio a great music group and their individual talents helped them to come up with unique renditions of some pop hits. Joined by two other talented members, Kevin Olusola and Avi Kaplan, the group successfully auditioned and made it to the show.
Their infectious combinations of pop, dubstep, jazz and hip hop coupled with their natural swag impressed the panel as well as the audiences and they won the show. This success exposed them to a number of media channels and they paced up their efforts for their first album. Pentatonix also received an overwhelming response through their YouTube channel which cemented their reputation.
