Background
Bolton was born in New Haven, Connecticut in 1953. His father’s name was Bolotin, which gave Michael the name, Michael Bolotin. The youngest of three kids, Bolton saw his parents getting divorced at a very young age and then lost his father at the age of thirteen. He found solace in music and decided to pursue a career in music.
He started off as a solo artist, and recorded his eponymous first album in 1975. The album used his original name Bolotin. A rock album, it featured Bolton with gruff vocals suited to that particular genre of music. But success did not come his way and he decided to join a heavy metal band "Blackjack". The band released two albums in 1979 and 1980 but both met a lukewarm response. The band parted ways in 1980 and Bolton decided to focus on his solo career once again. He changed his name to Bolton and set out on a new path.
Solo Career
Bolton set off on his solo career by recording another self titled album "Michael Bolton" and releasing it in 1983. The album was moderately successful, breaking into the top 100 on the Billboard chart. Around the same time he gained his first major hit with the song "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You". Bolton co-wrote that song for Laura Branigan, who was able to ensure the song reached number one on the Adult Contemporary Chart.
Bolton however still did not get success in his own solo career. That would however change with his album, "The Hunger", which was released in 1987. This was the time when Bolton completed his transition from the hardcore rocker to the soulful ballad singer. The album gave Bolton his first top 40 hit with "(Sittin' On)The Dock of the Bay".
Bolton’s next solo venture completed his transition to a chart topping superstar. His 1989 album "Soul Provider" was a worldwide hit and went multi platinum with almost four million copies sold. The album gave him five Top 40 singles as it broke into the top ten itself. The album featured his own rendition of "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You" which gave him his first number one hit and won him his first Grammy Award.
Since then Bolton never looked back. To date, eight of his studio albums have broken into the Top Ten. These albums have spawned nine number one singles. His number one album "Time, Love & Tenderness" showcased his second Grammy Award winning single "When a Man Loves a Woman", which is one of his most famous tracks.
Bolton has also collaborated with and written songs for some of the most famous acts of our time. Some of these include Lady Gaga, A.R. Rahman, Desmond Child, David Foster, Diane Warren, Walter Afanasieff, Billy Mann, Phil Ramone, Ne Yo and the great Bob Dylan.
A wonderful vocalist, a brilliant songwriter and a charismatic performer, are some of the things you will get to experience if you attend his concerts.
