Kenny’s musical career began in the mid 1950s with a rockabilly group, The Scholars. Later, he joined the jazz band The Bobby Doyle Trio and performed at several clubs around Texas. Kenny then began working as a writer, session musician and producer for other performers including Eddy Arnold and Mickey Gilley. By 1966, Kenny had released two solo singles and had joined The New Christy Minstrels. In 1967, Kenny along with other band members of The New Christy Minstrels formed their own group, The First Edition. The band garnered significant fame over the next decade and released a string of hits including ‘Something’s Burning’, ‘But You Know I Love You’ and ‘Just Dropped In’.
Solo Career & Breakthrough Albums
After The First Edition disbanded, Kenny launched his solo career in 1976. He released his debut studio album ‘Love Lifted Me’ on the United Artists Recording label. The album charted at number twenty-eight on the US Top Country Albums chart and featured two hit singles, ‘While The Feeling’s Good’ and ‘Love Lifted Me’. His second album ‘Kenny Rogers’, released in 1977, was a major success, reaching number one on Top Country Albums chart. The album produced the hit single ‘Lucille’ that charted at number one on US, Canadian and UK charts. The following stardom helped Kenny to come out of The First Edition’s shadow and established him as a successful solo act.
In 1978 and 1979, Kenny released his most successful albums ‘The Gambler’ and ‘Kenny’ respectively. Both the albums charted at number one spot on worldwide charts. Where ‘Kenny’ was certified four times platinum in the US, ‘The Gambler’ reached five times platinum status. Both the albums were also certified four times platinum in Canada.
