Using this gifted talent, Drew wrote his exclusive material and performed in various local clubs. He emerged as a Master of Ceremonies after winning an open mic competition at the Cleveland Comedy Club. The rest as they say is history.

In 1988 his popularity reached the national level when he contested in the reality show, Star Search. Continuing his journey as a stand-up comedian, he performed in The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson in 1991. Impressing Carson with his cutting-edge style, he soon made it to the famous Late Night with David Letterman. He became known to the regular viewers when he headlined his own stand-up special, Drew Carey: Human Cartoon in 1994.
