The Philharmonic hall is a concert hall by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Society based in Liverpool. The Society is focused at organizing classical music concerts along with a variety of other events. It is one of the earliest societies in its yonder showcasing exceptional professional orchestra and choir; Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Choir respectively. The Philharmonic Society also encourages young artists with Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. The society is actively involved in a variety of communal wellbeing and educational projects. This society has been making its city proud with a number of prestigious honors and awards. Philharmonic was a significant player in making Liverpool the actual European Capital of Culture.
This society was formed in the 1840s and later on in 1846, John Cunningham designed a concert hall to host various classical music performances. The hall constructed was hailed as one of the finest and most well adapted musical concert halls of its era by the Times magazine. The hall was the premier location for classical musical performances in Liverpool till a fire broke out destroying the entire building. The concert hall was rebuilt by Herbert J. Rowse in an art deco style and the same hall houses performances of famous classical artists till today. The auditorium was rebuilt in the late thirties and is still the same with minor additions with the passage of time.
The art deco architecture of the Philharmonic hall has an auspicious appeal setting up a magical ambiance for a musical evening and other events. The hall is a three storied earthen toned building with glass etched windows by Hector Whistler. The facade of this hall is designed symmetrically with a canopy at the entrance. The semicircular stair turrets surround the entrance with abstract motifs on the piers of the widows. The structure is strongly influenced by Dutch architecture especially by the designs of Dutch architect Dudok. The gilded reliefs by Edmund C. Thompson are the most engaging factor of the hall after musical performances. The art deco style incised female figures are the true representation of various musical moods. The organ built by Rushworth and Dreaper is also an invigorating part of the hall.
The Connection of the hall with Titanic also adds depth to this auditorium of art and inspiration. The ship was strongly connected to Liverpool and a major chunk of engineers and crew were also from this city including the legendary RMS Titanic orchestra. The violinist John Frederick Clarke who died in the ship was also from this city. The Philharmonic Theatre commemorates all the band members who were on the Titanic when it sank. The Memorial is designed by the well known architect J.A Hodel and is made up of copper.
The Philharmonic Hall Liverpool hosts around two hundred and fifty events annually with a major focus on classical music. If you are a big aficionado of classical music then you have to visit this place. The Philharmonic Hall is a multipurpose hall used for musical evenings, comedy shows and films on the Walturdaw Screen. There are also tours of halls for the lovers of archeology and art.
