Churchill Downs Tickets In Detail
Churchill Down is a world class thoroughbred horse racing facility located on the Central Avenue, in south Louisville, in the U.S. state of Kentucky. The racetrack officially opened in 1875, and became the first racetrack to hold both Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks in the same year. Churchill Downs has also hosted several Breeder's Cup racing events over the years, with the most recent one in 2006. The Louisville based racetrack has also been chosen to host the upcoming 2011 Breeder's Cup racing event. Churchill Downs has been consistently ranked amongst the top ten thoroughbred racetracks in North America by Horse Players Association of North America.
The prestigious racetrack is the property of Churchill Downs Corporation, which is responsible for all the operational aspects of the racing facility. The racetrack is named after John and Henry Churchill, principal owners of around eighty acres of the land on which the Churchill Downs stands today. They eventually let out this piece of land to their cousin, Colonel Clark, a horse racing aficionado and the president of Louisville Jockey Club & Driving Park Association. His father-in-law, Richard Broeck, a successful horse trainer and breeder introduced him to the sport. In his early years, Clark used to travel to Epsom Downs frequently to see the prestigious English Derby.
With the closure of two of Kentucky's most famous racetracks; Oakland and Woodlawn, urgency was felt to introduce a new thoroughbred racetrack in the state of Kentucky. This void was filled with the introduction of a new racetrack named, Churchill Downs. The modern racetrack was built near the rail road facilities to make sure that jockeys didn't face any difficulty with the transportation of their horses. At the turn of the twentieth century, Clark decided to sell the racetrack due to financial problems. In 1893, the Churchill Downs was sold to William Applegate, who later made several changes to the racetrack including shortening its total length to two kilometers. Furthermore, a new clubhouse and grandstand was built, and the traditional adorning of the Derby winner with garlands was also resumed. In 1903, the racetrack was handed over to the state government of Kentucky in order to curb gambling.
Churchill Downs is built on some 147 acres of prime Kentucky real estate. Over the years, the racetrack has become instantly recognizable by its two spires built on top of the main grandstand. Churchill Downs has the capacity to accommodate in excess of 150,000 spectators, including the standing crowd. The racetrack has a total seating capacity of around 55,000. In the last few years, the racetrack underwent an extensive renovation costing over $120 million to the current administration. During the renovation process, some eighty new luxury rooms and a new clubhouse was built on the premises of the race club. In 1986, Churchill Downs was declared a National Historic Landmark by the state of Kentucky. In June 2009, the racetrack successfully held its first-ever night race.
