Origin and Development
Inspired from one of his own stories, the play is written by the ingenious playwright and novelist Tennessee Williams. The play sheds light on the struggles of humans to make things perfect in an imperfect situation. The play was first presented in March 1945 and closed after completing one year of successful performances. The show became popular among the audience and was also admired by the critics which gave way to various adaptations.
Adaptations and Revivals
The play was first adapted to a movie in 1950 which was directed by Irving Rapper. The second movie adaption was made by Paul Newman in 1987. A lot of foreign films were inspired from the play in more recent time that became successful in their respective countries. Among them, an Iranian movie Here Without Me and the Indian Malayalam film Akale are noticeable. Besides this, The Glass Menagerie has also been performed on radio in a production called Theatre Guild on the Air. The play has also been revised as a TV series twice that starred talented actors of the screen. In the second adaptation, two of the performers won an Emmy Award for their remarkable portrayals of Jim and Laura in the play. In 1994, the play once again hit the Broadway stage, winning a lot of commercial and critical acclaim. A revamped Canadian production premiered in Toronto in 1997, where it was admired for its theatricality and wonderful performances. 2013 saw the latest revival of the play at the American Repertory Theater where it played from February till March.
