Newsies - The Musical is about inspirations, dreams, love, fighting for rights and making it big. It brings to light the plight of the underprivileged but the elevating singing and dancing balancing the murkiness of the topic make it great entertainment.
The production's story line is adapted from the 1992 musical drama film Newsies'. Just like the film, the musical tells the story of a group of newspaper boys and the hardships they have to face. They are led by the charismatic Jack Kelly, who helps them with problems that they face collectively as well as individually. Major problem faced by the newspaper boys are the difficult rules imposed by the publishers Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst. When the publishers raise their prices the boys led by Jack Kelly go on strike. Within the plot is the budding romance between Jack and the journalist, Katherine Plumber.
A work of high standard, the creative team has come with up a great show. Book for the theatrical adaptation has been written by the Tony Award winning writer and actor, Harvey Fierstein. The credit for direction goes to Jeff Calhoun. A major part of the production's appeal lies in its jubilant dance numbers which have been choreographed by Christopher Gattelli. The award winning music is the work of the very accomplished Alan Menken. The musician holds the distinction of winning eight Academy Awards. In his long association with Disney he has produced music for classics like Beauty and The Beast, Little Mermaid, Aladdin, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and many more. Keeping up with the reputation he has built for high quality work, the music for Newsies is par excellence as well.
World premiere of Newsies - The Musical was held at the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, New Jersey in September 2011. Although the production derived from the film but the musical was modified to include more songs and characters. The New Jersey run proved to be highly successful and in March 2012, the production made its Broadway debut at the Nederlander Theatre. At Broadway the production went on to win acclaim and seeing the positive response its engagement was extended.
Owing to the popularity of the play, its Broadway run has been announced as open ended. After the success of the production in the US, now it is all set to open at the West End in 2014. But till that happens, for the Broadway production are available and selling fast.
