Basis and Premiere
The book and lyrics for the musical were written by George Reinblatt who combined elements from the Evil Dead movie series. The storyline was developed for the stage by including jiffs of punch lines that added a humorous touch the overall dark plot of the show. The music was arranged by the talented trio of Christopher Bond, Melissa Morris and Frank Cipolla with Reinbatt accompanying them. Evil Dead: The Musical premiered at the Tranzac Club in Toronto. The musical proved to be a hit with the theatergoers within a short run of shows. The musical was also hailed for its unique design and performances which paved way for its various regional productions.
In 2006, Evil Dead made its Off-Broadway debut at the New World Stages for a limited engagement. With an incredible response from the audiences and critics, the original run was extended and it lasted till February 2007. The musical made its Toronto revival in June 2007 and ran through September 2008. During its wonderful staging of hundreds of shows, the musical won a Dora Audience Choice Award and was praised as “A winner! Devilishly entertaining! Still bloody hilarious and even more fun!” by The Toronto Star.
With rising popularity of the musical in Toronto, multiple productions started to stage their shows in different cities of the world. In 2011, the hype of the musical brought it to the hottest entertainment destination, Las Vegas. It opened at The Onyx Theatre and was performed for a close ended run. During the engagement, it met with the great critical acclaim and was compared with The Rocky Horror Show by trustable sources such as The New York Times. The same production completed another successful Vegas run in the following year.
The Bigger, The Better
In June 2012, Evil Dead: The Musical was brought to the famous V Theater for an open-ended engagement. Pitched as ‘The Ultimate 4D Experience’, the show was expanded in terms of stage design. A 100-seat special ‘Splatter Zone’ was added for the attendees that featured fake blood along with various other interactive techniques. The visual appeal of the show was enhanced through multimedia projections, extensive light design and special effects made the show more lively and entertaining.
