Foundation and Prominence
With a vision to expand the scope of dance beyond its obvious horizons, the company held its auditions at the YMCA in which 41 dancers were chosen out of 200 prospects. In 1963, Cincinnati Civic Ballet was formed and it presented its first show at the Wilson Auditorium of the University of Cincinnati in 1964. David McLain took over in 1966 and guided the company with its artistic vision and ambitious approach. In 1968, the company was named as Cincinnati Ballet Company and developed a strong reputation in the native community.
In the coming years, the company included some of the finest chorographers and expanded their performing catalog. A number of popular works such as Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker were added and the company toured around the country with their new shows. McLain passed away in 1984 and Ivan Nagy succeeded as the new artistic director of the company. Under the new leadership, the company boosted its image and added some more renowned productions in their repertoire.
Rise to International Fame
The start of 1990s marked a radical shift for the company as its infrastructure was expanded and a variety of facilities were developed for training, rehearsals and performing. In 1994, Cincinnati Ballet also found a permanent home at the Liberty Street. The present artistic director, Victoria Morgan joined the company in 1997 and her wonderful abilities put the company on an unending journey of success. She also added various modern styles and dance forms which enabled the company to resonate with the new generation.
Besides renewing Ballets set list, Morgan also teamed up with other famous ballet companies. Among others, their collaboration with the BalletMet Columbus proved to be extremely auspicious and together they crafted some of the most acclaimed works. Their famous shows include Swan Lake, Jewels and Stars and Stripes. The company toured across the US and Europe for their live shows and earned widespread commercial and critical acclaim.
Cincinnati Ballet is famous for their impeccable presentations which are accompanied by mind-blowing orchestral arrangements. The Nutcracker and the Swan Lake are two of the widely known and resourceful works of the company. Filled with stunning visuals, beautiful costumes and classic score, The Nutcracker celebrates the wonderful tradition of the holiday season.
Tchaikovskys beguiling music combined with the agility of the dancers makes Swan Lake a ballet masterpiece. Lots of dramatic elements and expressive body movements are combined in this touching tale of love, passion and revenge. Besides these productions, a number of other shows are presented throughout the season to entertain the locals as well as the citys visitors.
