The Nutcracker In Detail
According to George Borodin, "Ballet is not a technique but a way of expression that comes more closely to the inner language of man than any other". Ballet is such a beautiful form of dance and storytelling that it transforms you into the amazing World of that particular story. The Nutcracker is an excellent example of this marvelous form of art. For more than a century, this two act ballet is entertaining the audiences around the globe and has won various accolades from all over. The mesmerizing music and the alluring choreography when blends with the eternal romantic tale of the Nutcracker and Clara leaves you spellbound. Due to its immense popularity, the ballet has been adapted into various versions including jazz, pop, comedy, satire, TV series, motion pictures, commercials and most recently animation.
The Nutcracker ballet has been adapted by the famous Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky from the story "The Nutcracker and the King of Mice", written by E.T.A. Hoffman. The first performance of the ballet was choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov in December 1892. The ballet is divided into two acts and five different scenes, which includes the Party Scene, the Fight Scene, the Land of Snow, the Land of Sweets and the Dream Ends. The ballet starts on the Christmas Eve at the Stahlbaum house as the Stahlbaums are hosting Christmas Party and their children Clara and Fritz are welcoming their friends via dancing. Finally, their godfather Drosselmeyer arrives, who is an expert clock and toy maker. He always has an uncanny ability to attract people and his two life-size dolls amaze everyone with their dancing skills. Finally, he gives presents to the children. Clara gets a gorgeous Nutcracker and everyone loves it. But Fritz gets jealous and breaks it. Clara feels dejected and asks Drosselmeyer to repair it. As the party ends, Clara sleeps beneath the Christmas tree with the Nutcracker in her arms.
Suddenly, Clara wakes up at midnight to know that all the toys around her have come to life. She sees an army of mice ready to fight under the supervision of their evil master Mouse King. On the other hand, the Nutcracker also awakes and tries to fight with his army of toy soldiers. But as the Mouse King is on the verge of killing the Nutcracker, Clara hits him on the head with her slippers and the Nutcracker stabs him to death. Eventually, the Nutcracker transforms into a beautiful Prince and takes Clara to the enchanted forest called "The Land of Snow", where they were welcomed by the dancing snow. Their next destination is "The Land of Sweets", where the Sugar Plum Fairy welcomes them with open arms. When she learns about the bravery of the Prince and Clara, she rewards them with various dances including the Spanish dance, the Arabian dance, the Russian dance, the Chinese dance, the dance of the Clowns, the Mirliton dance, the Waltz of the Flowers and Grand Pas de Deux in the end. What happens when these celebrations finish? Will the Nutcracker and Clara start living happily ever after or will they go to their separate worlds? All this and more can be found in this dazzling ballet of the Nutcracker.
There have been several changes in the choreography, music and story of the Nutcracker over the years. Numerous versions of the ballet have also been performed and "Nutcracker on Ice" is quite well-known amongst people as it has been performed for a number of times, during the Christmas and New Year. Recently, it has been performed in different parts of the World including the US, the UK, Canada, China, Denmark, New Zealand, Bulgaria and Australia.
The Nutcracker is definitely Tchaikovsky's best work and that's why it is considered to be one of the best ballets in the World. The reason behind its more than a century long success is that the ballet deals with the eternal stories of dreams and love, told in a simplistic manner with a blend of soulful music and vibrant dances. So, if you are in a mood of experiencing something different and ethereal to relax your mind and soul than buy The Nutcracker tickets immediately!
