Chicago The Musical Tickets In Detail
There are times when you do not know how to pass your time. No fun activity comes to your mind and suddenly someone suggests attending a musical. With Chicago, The Musical you can guarantee yourself of a surely good time. With the backdrop of Prohibition-era Chicago, the theme of the musical centers on corruption in the application of criminal justice, and the associated satire. Chicago, The Musical draws on a 1926 play of the same name about actual crimes and criminals reported by the reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins.
The musical premiered at Broadway in June 1975 running for 936 performances. The original production was launched with the expertise of the choreographer Bob Fosse with his style strongly being reflected in the show. When Chicago, The Musical was revived at Broadway in 1996, it established itself as the longest-running musical on Broadway. The show has been presented more than 5,400 times as of January 12, 2010. After Broadway, the musical has been shown at London's West End theatre and various international theatres apart from several tours. In 2002, a film version of the show was also released with stars like Richard Gere, Renee Zellweger, Queen Latifah and Rob Marshall. The film was directed by Rob Marshall and won an academy award. Maurine Dallas, the reporter was assigned to report the 1924 trials of murderesses Belva Gaertner and Buelah Annan for the Chicago Tribune.
Chicago, The Musical revolves around the true story of Annan, a model who was accused of a murder in 1924. The Tribune reported that a man tried to criminally assault her and she was accused of killing him. She was adjudged "not guilty" one month later. A man Walter Law was found slouched over the steering wheel of a cabaret singer's abandoned car in March 1924. Gaertner, the cabaret singer was seen getting into the car as testified by two police officers. Gunshots were also heard while ammunition was also found. She was acquitted in June.
Watkins wrote some revealing columns on these trials. They became so popular that she decided to write a play based on them which was successfully staged at Broadway in 1926 receiving popular and critical acclaim. The show ran for 172 performances and was made into a silent film version, Chicago produced by the legendary Cecil B. DeMille. Phyllis Haver, the former Mack Sennett starred in it and a remake followed later "Roxie Hart" (1942) which starred Ginger Rogers. The storyline movie had a faint twist in the new version with Roxie being accused of murder without actually responsible for it.
The plot of Chicago, The Musical was conceived when Gwen Verdon read the play requesting her husband Bob Fosse to create a musical based on it. Playwright Watkins was then asked to sell the rights by Fosse but she did not consent to it as she had become a born-again Christian. The rights were eventually purchased by producer Richard Fryer upon her death in 1969. The musical score was put together by Fred Ebb and John Kander while the choreography and direction was undertook by Fosse.
The concert version of Chicago was brought to Broadway by Barry and Fran Weissler in November 1996. The show recovered its initial costs very quickly compared to any other musical in history thus setting a new record. A giant bandstand comprises the set with the costumes being minimalist and black. Before this show, Chicago: A Musical Vaudeville was staged which did not attract the audience as much as the new version. Audiences and critics praised Chicago: The Musical. The O. J. Simpson murder case had previously been the focus of attention in the society hence a criminal-as-celebrity theme was easily welcomed.
The musical earned the highest number of Tony Awards (a total six) compared to any other show in Broadway history. It was only "South Pacific" which beat it by seven Tony Awards. Chicago: The Musical earned Tony Awards for Best Leading Actress in a Musical, Best Choreography, Best Leading Actor in a Musical, Best Lighting Design, Best Revival of a Musical and Best Director of a Musical. Upon Verdon's leaving, Reinking took over the role of Roxie. The role of Roxie was again taken up by Reinking in 1996 when she turned 46.
The musical currently stands as the sixth longest-running Broadway show ever. It has been presented in three Broadway theatres, the Shubert Theatre, the Richard Rodgers Theatre and the Ambassador Theatre.
