Formation and Early Success

The New York Knicks history coincides with that of the BAA since the team was one of the initial chartered members. The Knicks were formed in the year 1946. After completing their roster, they took to the court for the first time on 1st of November that year to take on the Toronto Huskies at their home arena, the Maple Leaf Gardens. The team from New York came out on top in a close but a relatively low scoring game. The franchise made it to the playoffs but came up short against their Philadelphia counterparts.

The Knicks qualified for the postseason for the next three years as well but didn't have any titles to show for their efforts. That all changed in the year 1951 when they went on to clinch their first conference championship. With momentum now on their side, the New York Knicks racked up another two conference crowns in the next two years as well.

Drought and Success

The three conference champions accumulated in early 1950's was about as good as it got for the Knicks and their form suffered. It wasn't before 1970 that is all began to fall in place for them. 1970 saw them get their hands on their fourth conference title. They made that season an even more historic one by going all the way to lifting their first NBA title. The Knicks were back and that too with a bang!

Next year saw them win their division for the first time ever and they followed it up by winning another conference championship. The New York Knicks then went on to do the conference and NBA title double in 1973 to cap off an incredible four very successful years.

The next few years didn't go according to the script for the Knicks. It was in 1989 when they made their mark again by winning the division. Till 1999 the Knicks went on to win a total of three division championships and two conference crowns. But just like before, they could not make the most of that success for another fourteen years or so. The lean patch ended once again when they topped their division in 2013.
