They made a modest start to the season but really came into their element in July and if their form holds up then who knows where they might end up going when the season comes to a close. These are promising times for everyone associated with the team and they will be hoping to see their team climb the ladder and reach the top once again sooner rather than later.

The Los Angeles Sparks are among the biggest teams in WNBA. They have won the league championship and the conference title on more than one occasion to cement their place at the pinnacle of sport. They are once again being considered as strong contenders to go all the way this season and with the kind of roster they have, it will take a very brave man to bet against them getting there.

Early Beginnings

The Los Angeles Sparks were one of the initial eight teams that combined to form the Women's National Basketball Association in the year 1997. Sparks were incepted a few months earlier than the first season kicking off.  The team took to the basketball court for the first time on 21st June, 1997 at home against New York Liberty. Over fourteen thousand fans bought Los Angeles Sparks tickets to catch the team in action on that day.

The Sparks managed to win as many games as they lost during the season and failed to make the playoffs. They missed postseason festivities once again next year. They had the legendary Lisa Leslie in the ranks. She started to show her talents in the team's third season and led them to their first playoff appearance. They beat the Sacramento Monarchs to advance to the conference finals but came up short against the Houston Comets.

Turn of the Millennium

The success of 1999 provided them with an ideal platform to reach the next level. They celebrated the arrival of the new century by winning twenty eight games and losing only four. They won the first round but fell short of winning the conference by going down to the Comets, the team crowned WNBA champions for each of the first four campaigns. Next season saw them conquer them all. The Los Angeles Sparks went 28-4 for the second time in their history and this time they didn't falter. They went on to beat Sacramento to clinch their first conference title and downed Charlotte to lift their first WNBA championship. The Sparks went on to repeat the trick next year as well and did the conference and the WNBA double for the second successive season. The Los Angeles Sparks went into the next season to complete the three-peat for the first time in their history. They won their third straight conference title but lost to Detroit Shock which ended the dream. That was the last of their title triumphs as the Sparks have failed to win a championship ever since then. They have made it to the post season on seven occasions after that but failed to make beyond the conference finals. That hasn't stopped them from putting together another impressive squad that has the potential to bring back the glory days. If they keep their heads and believe in themselves then it shouldn't be too long before Sparks reach the top once again.

Home Arenas

The Los Angeles Sparks began to play at the Great Western Forum also known as the The Forum when they were incepted. That remained the case for the first four years before they moved to the Staples Center that still served as their home arena. The current venue has turned out to be lucky for the Sparks and they have now gone on to join the ranks of elite WNBA franchises.
