Early Years:
The Denver Broncos were founded by Bob Howsam in 1959. He was a minor league baseball owner and after being refused a charter by the NFL, started a new league with four other people called the American Football League. His team would obviously play in the new league, so Denver Broncos got a charter to play in the American Football League.
The team had a disastrous start to their football career, as they posted the worst record of any team in their debut season. Things did not continue to improve as they were the only team in AFL’s history to have not played in the title game. Despite their lack of success, the team did post some memorable results, including the famous 13-7, the margin by they beat the Detroit Lions and in the process became the first AFL team to defeat an NBA team.
Floyd Little Era:
In 1967 Lou Saban became the coach of the team. Former coach of the two times defending AFL champions Buffalo Bills, his first order of business was to keep the team in Denver. He had to generate revenue to expand the home stadium to 50,000 seats in order to be a part of the new AFL-NFL merger league. Interest in the team had dwindled due to long run of poor results, so he decided to choose his pick for an impact player. He chose Syracuse All-American Floyd Little, who would help turn around the fortunes of the Broncos.
Little began a door to campaign to raise funds for the new stadium and was able to generate interest in the team again. Besides that he was invaluable on the field. Success:
The team drafted quarterback John Elway in 1983. He was instrumental in guiding the team to their first Super Bowl, even though they still did not succeed in winning. But the team was on the up and under the leadership of Elway they were able to make it to a five Super Bowl finals.
The team finally won their first Super Bowl in 1997, when the team defeated the defending champions Green Bay Packers by a 31-24 at Super Bowl XXXII. Their first world championship had been a long time overdue and the team was not willing to let go of the trophy that easy. They were able to retain the title the following year after a convincing 34-19 victory over the Atlanta Falcons at Super Bowl XXXIII.
The Broncos are one of the most successful teams in the NFL, having experienced only six losing seasons in the last thirty five years.
