The concept of electronic music has been around for a long time. Since the early 1900s, the idea was there. One such artist is the electronic music duo band called Pretty Lights. Pretty Lights is made up of Derek Vincent Smith and Adam Deitch. Deitch started assisting Smith in live performances since July 2010.

The music they create is made by digital sampling, which is the use of a short recording from one song for another. Smith mixes different genres of music and creates melodious and pleasant sounding tunes.

Derek Smith knew how to produce hip-hop beats since he was in high school and made beats now and then. Later, he attended the University of Colorado, Boulder. After Smith was introduced to the electronic music scene by Aphrodite, his attention shifted from pure hip hop music to electronic music. Smith dropped out of University so he could focus more on his music. The name Pretty Lights comes from a Pink Floyd poster that said "Come and enjoy the pretty lights with Pink Floyd'.

Smith started using the name Pretty Lights since the summer of 2009; the same year when he toured various places with Cory Eberhand. Some of the Festivals that saw Pretty Lights play are Electric Daisy Carnival, Camp Bisko, 10KLF, Bonnaroo and Rothbury. After their performances at these fares were over, Pretty Lights, in the same year, went on a bigger tour performing around different cities in America. 2010 was also full of performances by Pretty Lights. Some of the places where they performed are 'Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival', 'The Ultra Music Festival', 'Marchone Music Productions Illumination Show ', 'Camp Bisco 9', 'Evolve Festival' and 'Starscape Festical'.

Pretty Lights have released a total of 6 albums, 3 of which are studio albums. The studio albums and EP's are available on their website. To promote their albums and to prevent complete commercialization of music, they have put them up for downloads free of cost. The first album they released was called 'Taking up your precious time' and it was released in 2006. After the release of their debut album, they released several other albums. 'Filling up the City Skies', 'Passing by behind your eyes', 'NYE 2009', 'Making up a Changing mind' and Spilling over everyside' were released in the years 2008, 2009 and 2010 respectively.

Cory Eberhand left the band and was replaced by Adam Deitch in 2010. As far as the reasons for Eberhand leaving are concerned, they are still unknown but Deitch has filled his shoes perfectly. Deitch plays the drums and made his first appearance for Pretty Lights at the Red Rocks. The sound that they use in concerts and in studio albums is generated by the AKAI MPD32 and a monome. A monome is a sequencer whereas the AKAI MPD32 is a MIDI Controller.

Pretty Lights have very energetic live performances. Smith can be seen in a hoodie jumping up and down to the beat of the music behind his laptop and other equipment. He certainly knows how to get the crowd going and the involvement of the crowd in their concerts is amazing. You can see the energy with all the jumping and dancing that is going on around the stage.
