Margaret Cho: A Woman of many Talents

The upcoming comedic show will present the popular artist, Margaret Cho best known for her works, Assassin and I’m the One That I Want. Born in 1968, Margaret Moran Cho is not only a comedian, but also a fashion designer, author, actress, singer and songwriter. Born in San Francisco, the star is of Korean descent. Comedy comes to her naturally as her father, Young-Hie wrote joke books that were popular in South Korea. From a young age, Cho gained interest in performing. At San Francisco School of Arts, she developed her keen interest in improvisational comedy. Working alongside the actor, Sam Rockwell, Margaret Cho decided to pursue this field as a professional career.

Humble Beginnings

Margaret Cho started off by doing standup comedy at a club, near to her parents’ bookstore. With this started a never ending journey and Cho started working on developing material for her performances at these clubs. She also performed regularly on her university’s campus. It was in 1992 that Cho was appeared on the Golden Girls spin-off television show named The Golden Palace. Even though the show was unsuccessful, with this Cho had entered the television industry. Soon, Margaret Cho was seen making regular appearances on the Arsenio Hall Show and the Jerry Seinfeld Show. The comedian finally got her big break in 1994 when she was approached by ABC developers who wanted to create a show around Cho’s routine. It was named All American Girl that presented situational comedy revolving around an Asian family. Cho’s role in the show landed her an American Comedy Award from the category of “Best Female Comedian” in 1994. In 1995, the comedian was seen hosting the New Year’s Rockin’ Eve show alongside Steve Harvey. The comedian has also made appearances on other television shows namely Celebrity Family Feud, Equals Three, Drop Dead Diva, the Cho Show and 30 Rock. For her role in 30 Rock, the comedian received a nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award from the category of “Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series”.

Other Projects

Apart from standup comedy, Margaret Cho is also the author of two books namely I’m the One That I Want published in 2002 and I Have Chosen to Stay and Fight, published in 2005. The artist has also released a single and a studio album. The single titled “I Cho Am a Woman” came out in 2008 on iTunes and was produced by Desmond Child. Her debut studio album came forth in 2010. It was called “Cho Dependent” and was released via Clownery Records. Singles namely “I’m Sorry”, “Eat Shit and Die”, “Lice”, “Intervention” and “Hey Big Dog”, became hits and the album received nomination for a Grammy Award in 2011 from the category of “Best Comedy Album”. The album featured writers such as Tegan and Sara, Ben Lee, A.C. Newman, Andrew Bird, Ani DiFranco, Simon Rex, Kurt Hall and Diana Yanez, to name a few.

  • Apart from comedy, Cho is an activist, supporting LGBT rights, women issues and Asians as well.
  • Most of her fans do not know that Cho played the role of John Travolta’s FBI colleague in the box office hit, Face/Off.
  • Margaret Cho was in a relationship with star director, Quentin Tarantino back in 1994. Tarantino made a guest appearance during a Pulp-Fiction parody that ran on Cho’s All American Girl show.
  • 30th April has been declared as being “Margaret Cho Day” in the city of San Francisco since 2008.
  • In 1999, Cho’s autobiography titled “I’m the One That I Want” was awarded the Performance of the Year award by New York Magazine.
