Formed in 1919, the symphony is a brainchild of a copper baron, part-time violinist and arts devotee William Andrews Clark, Jr. He then appointed Walter Henry Rothwell as the first conductor for the symphony, along with many musicians from several other symphony orchestras. The debut performance by the LA Phil was given in the same year, after eleven days of rehearsals. Sometimes Clark himself used to play with the second violin section.
Places and Performances
The first season played by the orchestra was at Trinity Auditorium' at Grand Ave. The year 1920 saw the symphony's performance at Philharmonic Auditorium, previously called Clune's Auditorium. From 1964 to 2003, Dorothy Chandler Pavilion' served as the performance venue for the main subscription shows by the LA Phil. From 2003 onwards, the symphony has also started performing in the Walt Disney Concert Hall'. Currently, the orchestra has two performance seasons every year, winter season from October to June at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, and summer season from July to September at the Hollywood Bowl. LA Phil also performs other regular concerts throughout the year, including a number of free community shows throughout Los Angeles County.
Gustavo's journey with LA Phil
Gustavo Dudamel has been with the Los Angeles Philharmonic since last four seasons, and he is expected to stay a part of the orchestra till 2018-19. This marks the Hundredth Anniversary for the symphony. Gustavo has taken the LA Phil to unthinkable heights, particularly with "LA Phil Live". His efforts have introduced the orchestra to huge number of audiences in Europe, South America and North America, as well as to the Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA). With YOLA Gustavo has also been able to take the symphony's music to underprivileged children in the communities of Los Angeles. He also serves as an inspiration to many, not just in Los Angeles, but also in Scotland and Sweden for his efforts and dedication towards music.
Catering to so many new audiences is not the only remarkable thing done by Gustavo, but also the degree of performances that he has elevated the symphony to, deserves its fair share of appreciation.. The diverse array of shows, ranging from The Gospel according to the Other Mary to Marriage of Figaro is itself testimony to the incredible talent possessed by Gustavo Dudamel.
