Jimmy began his solo musical career in 1970 with the release of his studio album Down to Earth on the Barnaby Records label. He later released another album High Cumberland Jubilee on the same recording label. Due to their limited initial appeal and stylistic difference than Jimmys later works, both the albums are often not considered to be a part of his albums chronology. His first album on major recording label, A White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean, was released in 1973. The chart breaking album that reached number forty-three position on the Top Country Albums chart is usually considered to be Jimmys first album, even by the artist himself.
Jimmys breakthrough album Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes came in 1977. The album reached number two spot on the Top Country Albums chart and number twelve spot on the Billboard 200 chart. It was a critical and commercial success, garnering a four star rating from Allmusic. It featured Jimmys most successful single to date, Margaritaville, which charted at number one spot on the Adult Contemporary charts in the US as well as Canada. The album has since then been certified platinum.
The Big 8
By 1980s, Jimmy had become a highly renowned concert draw. His live tours were attended by thousands of fans and were usually held at large amphitheaters. There were eight songs that were played at almost every Jimmys concerts and therefore became officially known as the Big 8. These tracks included Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes, Cheeseburger in Paradise, A Pirate Looks at Forty, Volcano and Come Monday. Later, his tracks One Particular Harbour and Its 5 OClock were also included in the list but the term for these concert songs remained the Big 8.
