Serving as a platform for voicing & portraying different elements of separate social set-ups, theater has gained in momentum as a medium of late; a medium with a conscience. In the Heights is another product of the ever-growing diversity in theater productions. Written by Puerto Rican writer Quiara Alegria Hudes & with lyrics/music by Lin-Manuel Miranda (who also stars as the protagonist), the musical depicts three days in the lives of characters living in a New York City Dominican-American neighborhood called The Washington Heights. Their different response to the inevitable change that is thrust upon them is also highlighted. In the Heights starts with graffiti artist Pete shown spraying on the bodega wall, & is eventually chased away by the owner, Usnavi. Nina Rosario returns from her freshman year at Stanford, & she is afforded a warm welcome by the residents who admire her good education. Secretly, however, Nina has struggled at Stanford, & lost her scholarship, so now her devastated family, which owns the neighborhood's car dispatch, will have to provide for her. Her parents, Camila & Kevin Rosario, leave Benny (the only African-American) in charge of the dispatch while they try to obtain a bank loan to provide for her. Benny & Nina share a walk where they understand how both have felt estranged at times. Meanwhile, Vanessa, Usnavi's love interest, does not have enough money to get her fantasy studio apartment in West Village. When Nina's parents reveal that they sold the dispatch to fund her education, Benny is distraught, & Nina follows him into a dance club to console him, where Usnavi & Vanessa are dancing & trying to get each other jealous. When the power suddenly goes out, fireworks are released to distract the vandals looting in the darkness, & Benny & Nina share a kiss. When Kevin learns that his daughter slept over at Benny's, he is livid & refuses the idea of Benny becoming a suitable match because of his race, until Camila calms him. Usnavi is convinced by the neighborhood's matriarch, Abuela, to use her lottery winnings of 96,000 to transport them both back to the Dominican Republic, an old wish of his. While his mind is on this & the neighborhood celebrates, Abuela dies, & during the vigil, Nina finds her old high-school graduation pictures from Abuela's collection which convinces her to accept her parents' sacrifice. Benny decides to start a new business, & Daniela (the hair salon owner) closes her shop but agrees to cosign on Vanessa's dream apartment with some convincing from Usnavi, who ends up kissing Vanessa before she leaves. With all businesses closing, Usnavi wakes up on his bodega's closing date to find Pete has painted a mural of Abuela on his bodega grate on his cousin (Sonny)'s advice. Overcome with emotion, he realizes the neighborhood was always his true home.

In the Heights takes its inspiration from two Puerto Ricans, Lin-Manuel Miranda (lyricist & lead actor) & Quiara Hudes (writer), who was a 2007 Pulitzer finalist for Elliot. The director is Thomas Kail & Andy Blankenbuehler is the choreographer. Miranda came up with the concept at Wesleyan University & the off-Broadway production started in February 2007 at 37 Arts Theater. The Broadway production first premiered on March 9, 2008 at the Richard Rodgers Theater.

The musical has received great critical praise, with its vibrant atmosphere & the relevance of its topics being widely lauded. Alex Lacamoire, of Wicked fame, does a sensational job as music director, & the musical score with Miranda's lyrics is a mesmerizing blend of party & soul music. In the Heights won four major Tony Awards as well as a Grammy for Best Musical Show Album.
