Since these plays are small budgeted they give their producers the space to be more experimental with their work; this being a distinctive feature from the highly budgeted and overly glamorized, Broadway.

OFF Broadway shows are entitled for the New York Drama Critics Circle award, the Outer Circle Critics Award, the Obie Award, the Drama Desk Award, and the Lucille Lortel Award. Although these productions are not eligible for the Tony Awards, however, an exception was made when Lotte Lenya won the Best Actress Tony Award in 1956 for the show called Three penny Opera.

Quite a few OFF Broadway shows have also had subsequent runs on Broadway. Rock of Ages, A Chorus Line, In The Heights, Spring Awakening, Grey Gardens, Urinetown: The Musical, Hair, Sunday in the Park with George, and little shop of horrors are a few of these. Plays such as I Am My Own Wife, Doubt, Bridge and Tunnel, and Coastal Disturbences, and productions such as Altar Boyz, Stomp, Blue Man Group, Naked Boys Singing and Perfect Crime all run as OFF Broadway for several years.
