Golf is always considered to be a game for gentlemen. Played in the lush green fields during beautiful summer mornings, golf is one of the most sophisticated and stylish games of the world. It isn't wild and dirty like football or rugby instead it is very calm and involves a lot of focus and strategy. The history of golf is quite unclear. Some say a golf-like game was started in the Netherlands in 1297. Others say that the kings of the Song Dynasty, China used to play something like golf. But the game is said to be introduced in Europe during the Middle Ages. The modern golf has been originated in Scotland during the 16th century and the first golf course was built there, which offered memberships for the players. The game was especially designed for the rich people and the Scottish Queen, Mary used to play there in 1567. They also introduced the rule of 18-hole course and a tournament was also held there amongst the different cities of Scotland. The first official game of golf was played in the historical grounds of "Musselburgh Racecourse". With the passage of time, golf was introduced first to England and then to rest of the World.

Those who aren't familiar, Golf is played in a golf course which has a series of holes at specific intervals, called the teeing area marked by two markers. The other areas include fairway, rough and the final putting area along with few hazards like water or sand bunker. The game is played by a Golf club (mainly made up of wood or iron), golf ball (spherical and pock-marked) and a tee (made of plastic or wood and used for the first stroke). Each round in the golf usually has 18 holes, which are played in a specific order of two continuous nine-hole rounds. The game starts with striking the tee in a long shot on the teeing area and it is done to raise the ball a few centimeters high in the air. Now, the actual game starts with the initial long distance shot on the fairway, known as "drive". After that, the golfer plays several shots like lay-up, approach or chip until the ball reaches the putting area, where the ball is finally put in the hole with a flagstick overcoming all the hazards. Golf's rules and regulations have been standardized by The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews (The R&A) and the United States Golf Association (USGA) in 2004. It states that, "Play the ball as it lies, play the course as you find it, and if you cannot do either, do what is fair".

Currently, golf is being played in almost every part of the world. According to the Golf Digest, 2005 edition countries like Scotland, New Zealand, Australia, Ireland, Canada, Wales, Sweden, England and United States are the ones with the most golf courses per capita. The players like Tiger Woods, Adam Scott, Bobby Jones, Phil Mickelson, Lee Westwood, Arnold Palmer, Lorena Ochoa, Gary Player and Ernie Els has taken the popularity of golf to another height. Various men's, women's and senior championships have also been introduced such as "The Masters", "The U.S. Open", "The Open Championship", "The LPGA Championship", "The U.S. Women's Open", "The Tradition", "Senior Players Championship" and several others.

Golf is definitely one of the few games, which have grown substantially with time. The popularity of the game is quite visible from the viewership of the recent tournament, which increased from 14.3 million last year to 16.7 million this year.
